Course on simplified EEG monitoring after cardiac arrest, Sept 5, 2017

Welcome to this one - day course on simplified continuous EEG monitoring after cardiac arrest! We will focus on how to use this technique for prognostication and for identifying electrographic seizures, including postanoxic status epilepticus. Typical EEG patterns will be described. We will learn how the cortical EEG activity is developing during the first days after the cardiac arrest in different grades of postanoxic injury. Strengths and weaknesses of the technique will also be looked into. We will learn how amplitude integrated trendmonitoring (aEEG) can ease interpretation of long registrations. During the afternoon we will have a practical session in which you will look at EEG-monitoring data from patients in small groups with guidance from experienced EEG-specialists. The use of routine EEG registrations and testing of reactivity to stimuli will also be discussed.

The simplified EEG-montage that we use on cardiac arrest patients in Lund since more than 10 years is applied by the ICU-nurses, after a short education [Continuous and simplified EEG to monitor brain recovery after cardiac arrest. Friberg et al, Critical Care 2013, 17:233]. The key for success is a close cooperation between the ICU and the department of clinical neurophysiology.

No prior experience of EEG interpretation is needed and we will start the course with a short session on basic EEG theory. A few years of experience as a physician in clinical neurology, cardiology or intensive care is preferable.

The goal is for you to be able to perform preliminary bedside interpretations of simplified EEG and improve your understanding of EEG in the intensive care.
